Casus Belli
03:19

For every war, there is a reason. This is called the casus belli ("occasion for war"). In this song, I illustrate the conflict with alternating (even opposing) themes in strings and wind instruments laid out over blanket of synth sounds.

Before a confrontation between two armies took place, at least one of the armies had to be moved to the battlefield or settlement to be besieged. This song depicts a march, utilizing a snare drum VST as the main rythm provider.

The Siege
03:10
|
|||
The siege would be a protracted endeavour, with the occasional rise of tension caused by skirmishes or the feeling of the final assault drawing near. In this song both protraction and tension is illlustrated by orchestral instruments.

One of the most powerful weapons on the medieval battlefield was the longbow. The English longbowmen were feared by all who knew about the havoc a few coordinated rains of arrows would wreak on the opposing army. Those possessing longbowmen were all the more confident because of their power, and this is the essence of this song. The long phrases and calm synth sounds illustrate this confidence.

Cold Steel
04:48
|
|||
This is the first song I composed for this album. I used the Dexed VST, a software remake of the Yamaha DX7. The FM sounds feel cold, maybe except for the bass sound. This illustrates the cold steel of the weapons and some forms of armour used on the medieval battlefield.

The title of this song is a play on words, since the weapon which goes by the name morningstar probably wasn't very shiny or shimmering. It consisted of a shaft to which a chain and spiked ball was attached. The synth sounds used in the song is an attempt to imitate the figurative shimmer with audio.

By Sword and Dagger
03:49
|
|||
The sword in the title of this song is the knightly longsword, and the dagger is the weapon which every knight had at his belt in addition to any other armaments. The use of these two weapons were common in judicial duels, for example the legendary (and not necessarily historic) duel between a knight named Leutold von Königsegg and an unknown adversary as retold by the fencing master Hans Talhoffer in one of his combat manuals (German: Fechtbuch). The duel is illustrated and we can follow the fighting, which begins with longswords (the knights utilizing a technique known as half-swording), and ending with Leutold stabbing his adversary to death with his dagger.
The weapon pair is illustrated by the use of grand piano on the one hand and strings on the other. They complement each other as does the sword and dagger in the knightly equipment.

It is proper and fitting to end an album like this with a homage to the fallen heroes, for every victory on the battlefield also leads to tragedy for those who lost someone. And being a song, this is a completely vocal piece. All sounds are from the Xpand!2 workstation.
