Lord Baerston experiences the desolation of his hideout, far away from the ruins of his castle. It is very difficult to see how he can even start to rebuild his life from here. Keeping himself fed, warm and dry is a daily task which is more than enough to handle.
What's more, he's constantly worrying about his wife and child, whom he sent away just before the siege.

Being alone, Lord Baerston has plenty of time to reflect on his past - and on his future. He cannot remain here. But trying to reach the coast on his own is dangerous. There are certainly enemy patrols on the roads. Yet, he knows he will have to try.

Suddenly, the forest is too quiet. And then, a roar is heard! A bear has approached the hideout, clearly scared but prepared to fight for its life. The prospects are suddenly much more bleak for Lord Baerston, but rescue is at hand.
A party of bearhunters appear and they kill the bear. Lord Baerston takes the opportunity to negotiate with them. To his immense relief, they are willing to take him with them to the coast.

Lord Baerston travels with the bearhunters. To avoid any trouble, he is disguised as a hunter.

Lady Baerston and her child is in safety in a foreign land. But her heart aches as she misses her husband. Alas, that he would be at her side!
