1.
Lord Baerston is pondering his recent victory over the imperial troops. Some say the kingdom can enjoy peace now. Not for long, to be sure. Clearly, the imperial troops underestimated the power of this kingdom. The Empire will declare peace once all enemies are crushed. And the kingdom still lives, and thrives. For the moment.
2.
Messengers are arriving in a steady stream. And they carry bad tidings. The Empire is invading the land, laying waste to every village and every town. The king is grieving.
3.
The roads leading to the capital are filled with refugees, and they all bear witness to the atrocities committed by the Imperial Army.
4.
The proud capital has endured every siege during its history, so even though they hear of the approaching imperial army, the citizens feel confident. They receive the refugees with open arms, not realizing what an immense danger they, too, are facing. For this time, the foe is powerful beyond their imagination.
5.
Beyond the forest, black smoke rises. It darkens the horizon. The towns and villages of the land are burning.
6.
The smoke seems to be coming closer. But it is not smoke. The horizon is now covered by soldiers, an army so vast it seems incomprehensible.
7.
As the army approaches, there is no longer any doubt. There are banners, a sea of banners. Imperial banners.
8.
The army comes ever closer. Slowly, the insight overwhelms Lord Baerston: This time, the Empire will not give up. They want him dead. And nothing can change that.
9.
Seeing the vast army approaching, the citizens are paralyzed, so great is their fear. After a while a frantic activity ensues in the city. Men-at-arms run to the walls, bowmen accompanying them, while others start preparing to meet the onslaught behind the gates - for they will be breached all too soon.
10.
An overwhelming amount of siege machines are pushed towards the city walls - catapults, ballistas and the largest siege towers Lord Baerston has ever seen. The Empire will not be waiting for a lack of supplies in the capital. The Imperial army is already preparing an all-out assault.
11.
While the siege machines are slowly coming into position, Lord Baerston sees longbowmen getting ready to fire their deadly storms of arrows. There are many of them, far too many.
12.
The Imperial longbowmen wreak havoc upon the city with their storm of arrows. Lord Baerston watches in horror as scores of his fellow defenders fall.
13.
Wave after wave of imperial infantry flow from the siege towers. They are totally overwhelming the defenders. Courage is not everything...
14.
Beyond the dark sea that is the Imperial Army, new banners appear. They are white, and they form a line across the entire horizon. Approaching like a tidal wave, they form a new sea, larger than the dark one, and seem intent on swallowing all darkness. What is this? White banners... They are only heard of in the legend of the Ancient King. Can it be..? It must be..!
15.
It was not a dream, nor only a legend. The invincible army of the Ancient King is here. The King himself is mounted on his white horse. Shuddering at the sight of the white ocean of shining armour and glimmering swords the Imperial Army is routed.
16.
After the battle, Lord Baerston is slowly walking through the streets of the capital. He's exhausted. Seeing so much death and destruction takes its toll. The whole kingdom lies in ruins, so many have lost so much. To rebuild all this will take years. But the Ancient King arrived. It was true. As Lord Baerston is walking up the stairs to the Western tower, his wife approaches him. She looks pale, and very tired. Of course, she witnessed the battle from the window... As they embrace, she says: "Come. We will rest now. We can work another day." Yes, there is much to do. But right now, it doesn't seem impossible anymore.
