A New Beginning

Lady Baerston writes in her diary about the Empire's advancement towards Baerston Keep. It was a terrifying time, and she still has nightmares originating from it.
"The nightmares are terrible. They feel so real.
We had no idea what was in store for us. But as I write this, know that it wasn't without horror.
No one questioned their authority, their absolute demand of resources. We could do nothing to stop them.
Little did we know."

The Sacrifice of Honour
06:32
|
|||
Lord Baerston reflects on what happened when the Keep fell. He defends himself against a possible accusation of cowardice which could be forwarded by his fellow knights.
"So, I escaped.
It would have been more honourable to die with my soldiers that day, wouldn't it?
I was the last one to be alive.
Should I then have sacrificed my life, as did those who defended Baerston Keep?
I did not sacrifice my life. Not this time.
I sacrificed my honour to save a child's father.
I sacrificed my honour so that a wife would not become a widow.
What sacrifice, my fellow knights, is bigger?
What is more beneficial for those in need?
Oh, I will lay down my life, if that is the only way to save what I hold most dear.
But this was not the time for that."

During a stroll in the town where Lord Baerston now resides, he hears a voice he would have wished never again to hear. He walks away, while hurting memories surface in his mind.
"You once were my friend
'twas all a game
It came to an end
shall ne'er be the same
Misusing my trust
with supple smile
turning love to dust
rending my heart
After years of pain
a glance, a shout
the try was vain
I turned about
More time has passed
I sense it's true
Forgiveness vast
Healing is due
Yes, you once were my friend
And 'twas all a game
So it came to an end
and shall ne'er be the same"

The Jester
02:24
|
|||
At the inn where he's staying, Lord Baerston meets a jester. They have a lengthy conversation. People always think jesters are merry and full of joy. But that is not always the case, Lord Baerston realises, as he hears the jester tell about the sad events of his life. The smile he wears when he performs hides well the pain in his soul.

The former friend whom Lord Baerston saw earlier must have sent a message to the Empire. And now, they are here. The king doesn't want to risk the lives of his remaining vassals (one died not long ago) so he commands Lord Baerston to lead the defence. Lord Baerston leads a counter-attack with great success, and the Empire's troops are forced to retreat.

The Old Castle
04:34
|
|||
The Empire's attack failed miserably. The triumph of Lord Baerston is immense, he led the troops to a glorious victory.
The king has no other choice but to confer vassalship on Lord Baerston. He also gives him the castle of the vassal who recently died.
Lord Baerston now inspects the old castle, which has been left unattended for long periods of time during the many travels of its former lord, who didn't care much for the property. The castle is a sorrowful sight, in need of repair and devoid of all signs of life. But it will serve as a good compensation for the previous Baerston Keep. The renovation starts shortly.

Lord and Lady Baerston enter their new castle, and the festivities begin. It is with mixed feelings they inaugurate their new home. The past still hurts, the present is a challenge. But together, they face the future. For now, they are safe. There is no telling for how long. Only one thing is certain: The Empire will come back. And its military resources are immense.
